Hook in North East Hampshire has changed and developed over the centuries. The area was occupied long before the first written references to it in the medieval period. Its development has been dominated by transport, particularly the London to Exeter Coach Road in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the subsequent advent of the railways in the nineteenth century. In recent decades it has been subject to rapid and significant growth particularly since the opening of the M3 in the 1970s.
