Notes:
Hook grew up around the intersection of the London to Exeter and reading to Gosport roads. It was therefore natural that it was at the centre of one of the largest turnpike trusts that developed in Hampshire in the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite the railway through the village being opened in 1839, Hook was not provided with a station until 1883.At this time the railway reigned supreme, but following WW1 a network of road motor services developed, both passenger and freight, undermining the pre-eminence of the railways, a process accelerated by the onset of private motoring from the 1950s onwards. This book tells the story of how these various services came about and developed over time. It sets the development within the context of the prevailing political climate, which had a significant influence on the way services developed.
