Police Lieutenant Andy Bastian is hired to drive young teenager Ralph Bartlett from California to Kansas, traveling east on Route 66. Ralph's rich father has booked his brilliant but unstable son into a mental clinic for treatment, and wants the arrangement to be kept secret from the public. Accompanying them is Olga Beaumont, a psychiatrist who has been hired to care for Ralph. But before they've gone far, Andy realizes they're being followed. Then they discover that their car's been sabotaged, and narrowly escape death.
