Notes:
Industrialist John Wood was born in Bradford around 1791 and devoted himself to the cause of the factory children. John Wood persuaded Richard Oastler to take up the cause leading to the Ten Hours Act. He supported Michael Sadler's parliamentary campaign with a huge amount of his own money as well as his personal endeavours, and this led directly to Lord Ashley's involvement and his great reputation as the philanthropic Earl of Shaftesbury. He spent his later years in Hampshire, dying at Thedden Grange in 1871 and is buried in Shalden churchyard.
