Notes:
At Trafalgar about 22% of the crew of Nelson's Victory were volunteers. In 1945, the R.N.V.R. boosted by the many wartime volunteers was providing no less than 88% of all the commissioned officers then serving in the Royal Navy. At its peak, R.N.V.R. officers and men from ordinary seamen to Commodore, served in almost every ship and shore base, numbering 48,000 officers and 5,000 men. With such a tradition oin the Navy's resources, the story of the R.N.V.R. (now R.N.R.) is a proud one. Looked at through the eyes of one division, that of London, with its drill ships and Embankment landmarks HMS President and HMS Chrysanthemum, naval historian Gordon Taylor has written a definitive history of the permanent Reserve since its formation in November 1903.This story - set against the rapidly changing backcloth of the last 100 years of naval history and generously illustrated throughout - will be of great interest to retired and serving naval personnel, and to the many thousands of Reservists past and present.
