As he travelled around England, he captured day to day life on the railways, from loco-hauled passenger trains to gas lamps and ticket barriers. This collection of photographs show how thoroughly stations, track, motive power and working practices have been modernised. In the 1970s, Andy Sparks was an avid train-spotter and keen photographer. As he travelled around England, primarily the north west, he realised that vestiges of the steam age remained all over the network, even though it was now well and truly over. His camera captured day to day life on the railways, recording for posterity scenes that were taken for granted and have now disappeared into memory - everything from loco-hauled passenger trains, the first generation of multiple units, short wagon freight trains, semaphore signals, newspaper and mail trains to tiny details - mechanical vending machines, gas lamps, enamel signs, post office trolleys and ticket barriers. Virtually all of these photographs have never been published before: only recently have the films been rediscovered and printed. These eye-catching images of a changing railway will enthral any enthusiast who lived through this period, and show how thoroughly stations, track, motive power and working practices have been modernised in the last thirty years.
