Robin Knox-Johnston's account of his experimental voyage across the Atlantic in an attempt to shed light on the achievement of Columbus in 1492. An astrolabe replaced the sextant, and even the compass on his boat "Suhaili" had its corrector magnets removed before the voyage started.
