Notes:
Perhaps the most famous of the great battleships and battle cruisers ever to fly the White Ensign of the Royal Navy was the Renown. She mounted the big 15-inch guns of the battleship but had the speed of a light cruiser. She entered service in 1916 in the aftermath of the Battle of Jutland (and was the longest capital ship in the Navy at the time).
With the approach of the Second World War it was decided that she should be completely rebuilt, and she emerged the day before war was declared as virtually a brand new vessel. Her subsequent exploits became legendary. She hunted the Graf Spee, and chased the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau off Norway. As Admiral Somerville's flagship she was at the bombardment of Genoa, in the hunt for the Bismarck and in the Malta convoy operations, and served with the Home Fleet in guarding Arctic convoys and the North African landings.
