Towards the end of the nineteenth century the invention of the locomotive torpedo brought about a revolution in naval warfare tactics. Existing ships were unsuited to the effective handling of this new weapon and significant improvements in design and speed became a matter of urgent necessity. It was from the experimental craft which grew out of this emergency that sprang the long line of famous ships we now know under the generic term of destroyers.
