LGBT+ History Month
February is LGBT+ History Month, now in its 20th year. It was founded by the education charity Schools OUT UK with an overall ambition to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public.
LGBT+ History Month was set up in recognition that so much of LGBT+ history and experience has been hidden. Its remit is to reclaim the past, celebrate the present and create the future and is a month in which everyone can participate. As such, it provides an opportunity to focus on the rich and diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender literature as well as the history of gay rights and related civil rights movements.
This year we are marking the month with three promotions to help the stated aim of making LGBT+ history and literary heritage more visible:
LGBT+ History – a selection of adult non-fiction titles focusing on the history of the LGBT+ movement from historical accounts to lived experience.
LGBT+ history through literature – a selection of adult fiction, poetry and diaries from antiquity to present day showing how fiction can reveal LGBT+ history and the times in which it was written.
LGBT+ History Month for children – a selection of titles for children that reflect the diversity of family life.
